Changes to the Protection for Persons in Care Act

The Protection for Persons in Care Act (Act) has been re-written to better protect adults from
abuse while they are receiving care or support services funded by the Government of
Alberta.

The re-written Act is expected to be proclaimed in the spring of 2010.

Some of the changes to the Act include:

-A timeline for reporting abuse.
- A new definition of abuse that focuses on serious harm.
- New duties for service providers and individuals who provide care or
support services.
- New compliance requirements.
- New established roles of a complaints officer and director.
-New offences and an appeal process.
