Local Social Workers Selected to Write for North American Licensing Exams

Grande Prairie social worker Trish Smith and Calgary social worker June Yee have been selected to serve in the North American network of subject matter experts who write test questions for the social work licensing examinations used in the Canada and the United States.

Yee is a congenital heart, cardiac function and heart health social worker for the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary. Smith is a sessional instructor in social work at the University of Calgary, and works as a private consultant providing a range of social work services. Both are Registered Social Workers in Alberta and members of the Clinical Specialty Registry.

They will be writing questions designed to be used on the examinations administered by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). Smith and Yee were chosen from applicants across the United States and Canada, and participated in a writer training session held in Arlington, Virginia in June.

The ASWB examinations are designed to measure entry-to-practice competency of social workers. A passing score on an ASWB is a requirement for licensure at one or more levels of practice in 49 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.  Two Canadian provinces—Alberta and British Columbia—use the ASWB examinations to certify clinical social workers.  About 31,000 ASWB examinations are given each year.

Other Alberta social workers who are or have been involved with the examination program include Richard Shelson (Lethbridge), Jane Matheson (Calgary), Alison MacDonald (Edmonton), and Shannon Bender-Bell (currently living in BC) who is a co-chair of the Examination Committee for 2010.
