When:             Thursday, March 25, 2010
Time:              12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. (EST)

This National Educational Webcast is timely given the compounding costs of poverty on our most vulnerable populations that social workers from across Canada are witnessing as consequence of the most recent economic downturn. Canada is at a public policy crossroads for the development of a national strategy for poverty reduction. Presenters will emphasize the increasing cost of poverty among marginalized populations.

Presenters will draw on practice experience and client stories to motivate social workers in their efforts to advocate on behalf of clients. They will share experiences of supporting marginalized populations, working towards the adoption of poverty reduction strategies and more equitable support services.

The event will be introduced by CASW President Darlene MacDonald and presented in English. The format of the webcast includes a 30-minute interactive audio-streamed PowerPoint presentation, followed by a question and answer session moderated by CASW Vice-President Elaine Campbell.

CASW - National Social Work Month
"Social Workers Speaking Up: Poverty Costs"
March 1 - 31, 2010

Social workers daily see the costs of poverty – emotional, physical, social, and financial. These numbers make it hard for others to ignore. If we want to ensure the health and well-being of all people living in Canada, poverty reduction is the best starting point. Poverty costs people their physical, emotional, social, and mental well-being. During National Social Work Month, social workers call upon citizens to recognize the impacts of poverty and to support its eradication.

Social Workers Making a Difference in Women's Lives
National Social Work Week
March 1 – 7, 2009

National Social Work Week in Alberta for 2009 is March 1 – 7. Our theme this year is Social Workers Making a Difference in Women’s Lives. Social Workers are employed in settings that serve women such as women’s shelters, children and youth services, and health care settings. Women continue to be vulnerable and marginalized in our society. Social workers support women to overcome obstacles that hinder their healthy functioning.

Please note that our theme is not consistent with the 2009 theme of the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) for the first time. ACSW strives to work collaboratively with CASW. Unfortunately, CASW changed the previously agreed upon theme after ACSW had done extensive work incorporating the theme into the 2009 conference. We apologize for any confusion regarding this.

In March of each year, social workers throughout the country celebrate National Social Work Week in recognition of the contributions of social workers to society.

National Social Work Week gives all social workers in Canada an occasion to celebrate our social ideals and values, and to tell the world around us that this is what we believe in.

The goals of Social Week in Alberta include:

  • Educating the public about the wide range of roles social workers perform
  • Heightening the professional profile of Registered Social Workers (RSWs)
  • Encouraging organizations who employ Registered Social Workers and the communities that benefit from their efforts, to celebrate the role and contribution of RSWs by hosting a wide variety of events.

Events held previously include: BBQs, proclamations by local, provincial and federal governments, articles published in the media, awards ceremonies, continuing competence workshops, information displays at workplaces, conferences, luncheons, and awareness raising mailouts.

RSWs across the province are encouraged to form planning groups to promote National Social Work Week. ACSW has resources available to assist in celebrating. Local Area Coordinators also have access to resources and may assist in planning events. Please check our web site (www.acsw.ab.ca) or call our office 1-800-661-3089 or in Edmonton 421-1167 for more information.
